Can Am Commander Review

The Can Am Commander has been one of the most popular UTVs on the market since its release in 2010, despite nearly a dozen distinct RZR models as well as more recent entries to the market by Honda, Yamaha and Arctic Cat. Part of the Commander’s wide appeal is its high functionality as both a sport model and a utility model. While the Maverick has certainly stoeln the Sport UTV spot light in recent months, the Commander remains one of the best multi-purpose UTVs available.

The Commander is available in a standard model, a high performance X model, a mildly upgraded utilitarian XT model, and the luxurious LImited model with its GPS and cushy air-ride suspension. Standard features include also a versatile dual-level cargo box, an adjustable driver’s seat & with tilt steering wheel and the industry’s thickest, strongest cage, with an incredible 2″ diameter. The vehicle is offered with two engine options, a 799 cc, V-twin, liquid-cooled, SOHC, 8-valve (4-Valve / Cyl) and a 976 cc, V-Twin, Liquid-Cooled, SOHC, 8-Valve (4-Valve / Cyl) Rotax powerplant. Both of these engines come with a Centrivocal clutch, and a transmission with High, Low, Park, Neutral & Reverse modes.

The XT model features a Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering system, a high performance, patented Visco-Lok QE Auto-Locking Front Differential, giant 27″ Maxxis Bighorn Tires on 14″ aluminum wheels, a heavy-duty front bumper, and Bed Rails & Mudguards. A 4,000-LB Warn Winch and an Analog / Digital Gauge & Custom Steering Wheel are also included in the XT package.

The Commander’s double a-arm front suspension prevents front-end dives with its uniquely designed geometry. The system works to eliminate diving during heavy breaking and and in extremely rough terrain. 10 in of travel up front as well as five-way preload-adjustable motion-control shocks and dual outboard disc brakes with 214-mm discs and twin-piston calipers in the front and a single disc brake in the rear keep the Commander under control.
